ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. does not like the Cleveland Browns’ selection of DeShone Kizer.

In a televised hit for ESPN, Kiper when on a mini rant, questioning why DeShone Kizer decided to leave Notre Dame early.

He prefaced his rant with a mention of Andrew Luck, who used all of his eligibility, and then went on to be a consensus No. 1 overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts.

This is what Kiper said on-air:

"“Why do these quarterbacks feel the need to rush into the NFL when they are coming off a mediocre year? You stay in college, until you nail it. Once you play at a super high level then you’re ready for the best in the world. That’s what the NFL is…It’s not college football where a lot of these guys are going to be looking for another occupation. So, for DeShone Kizer, and a lot of these college quarterbacks, play out your eligibility unless your big time. Once you’re big time, fine. DeShone Kizer, this year, was not to that level.”"

In Kiper’s recap of the draft’s second day, the long-time draft guru listed the Browns’ selection of the Notre Dame product as “questionable.”

"He needs a year or two behind a veteran, and the Browns don’t have that in Cody Kessler, who was decent when healthy last year and likely still will take the snaps in 2017. Maybe Hue Jackson thinks he can coach up Kizer in practice without throwing the young QB into the fire. Maybe Kizer’s upside was to pass up. Either way, I had Nathan Peterman and Joshua Dobbs rated higher, and both were safer picks. Kizer could be a boom-or-bust guy. For Browns’ fans sake, here’s hoping it’s the former."

Kiper is all in, he’s against this pick, and I’m not really sure why.

It’s not like the Browns reached for Kizer, drafting him late in the second round. He said it himself. “Maybe Kizer’s upside was to good to pass up.”

Nathan Peterman and Josh Dobbs are good prospects, but they don’t come close to matching Kizer’s potential.

Remember, many had  Kizer  ranked behind Deshaun Watson as the second best college quarterback prospect. His inconsistent play and bad coaching from Brian Kelly led to his fall down the ladder, as Notre Dame finished a disappointing 4-8.

Former NFL exec and Sirius XM Radio voice Gil Brandt disagrees with Kiper.

And what did Brandt think of Kiper’s analysis? He had no problem throwing some shad at Mel.

This is an odd stance for Kiper to take, especially since he had Mitch Trubisky mocked to the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick.

There’s a lot to like about Trubisky, but even he las less experience than Kizer.

Trubisky has 13 college starts, Kizer had 25.

Next: Who I

As Browns fans, of course we’ll agree with Mr. Gil Brandt on this evaluation.
