New Cleveland Browns QB Brock Osweiler met the media and had an awkward exchange with a reporter’s tough line of questioning. Was it fair?

Brock Osweiler addressed the media during organized team actives as fans and the press alike got to see the Super Bowl XL champion in his No. 17 jersey.

The Cleveland media didn’t waste anytime questioning Osweiler over his time with the Houston Texans, and how that comes to Cleveland.

"I’m not going to compare the two situations, because one, they’re two different teams.they’re two different systems, offensively, how we do things. My sole focus right now is on this system, this team, and being my absolute best I can possibly be for the Cleveland Browns."

Then Osweiler was asked if he was good enough to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

"“Absolutely, absolutely,” Osweiler said."

Are there such things as dumb questions? Yes. And this one of them. If Osweiler’s answer was “No,” he should’ve been cut that second.

But he answered, and the reporter pressed on, asking “Why?”

"“I think the proof is in the film from the past two years,” Osweiler said."

And that’s when the exchange got awkward. The reporter followed up again:

"“For some people the proof is not in the film,” the reporter said."

Osweiler handled it well.

"“That’s OK,” he said, with a smile and a nod."

Here’s a video of the interaction:

It was interesting to see the Browns’ Twitterverse beat up the reporter who asked these questions because nationally, the jokes were more aimed at Osweiler for saying the film does vindicate his play over the past two years.

So was the questioning fair?

There’s no doubt. It was tough, and it was awkward. Asking a guy if he should be a starting quarterback in the NFL seems like a dumb question, but wonder if there’s that one in a million chance the player being interviewed says “No.”

Then you’ve got a story.

Imagine if Osweiler had said no. Cleveland talk radio show hosts’ heads would be exploding and the headline about Brock’s shaky confidence would be dominating the news cycle.

As for the reporter continuing to press when Osweiler said…Give Osweiler credit for handling the situation in a first-class way. There’s many an athlete out there who wouldn’t have hesitated to drop some selective French on the reporter for asking that type of question, because the reporter did come off an annoyance.

However, you want your reporters to be pesky, annoying nuisances. Because if they’re doing this, they’re probably doing their jobs. They’re not hanging around to befriend everyone they interview.
