Sam Cassell Jr., PG

Sam Cassell Jr. Yep, you know the name. He’s son of NBA champion Sam Cassell.

Backup point guard is still an issue for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The franchise just can’t get anyone to play the position under 30 ever since Matthew Dellavedova departed Cleveland for the Milwaukee Bucks via free agency.

Perhaps Cassell can catch on as a third point guard, because just based off his summer-league play, the Iona product looks like he could play in the NBA today. His athleticism is something you notice right away.

The kid looks like he belongs.

If you’re Kay Felder, that’s not good news.

But that’s what training camp is all about, finding the best players to get this city another Larry O’Brien Trophy.

After spending two years at UCONN, Cassell transferred, sat a year, and played his final season at Iona, where he averaged 10.9 points, 3.0 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 36 percent from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-4 guard went undrafted, but he could seriously contend for a job.

Jose Calderon is the primary backup, but besides being Kyrie’s main understudy, he’ll be charged with mentoring a young point guard, according to AmicoHoops.net founder Sam Amico, who made those comments during an interview with 92.3 The Fan.

That could be Cassell.
