Cleveland Browns training camp: Bold predictions for the offense
DeShone Kizer will sit atop the quarterback depth chart by the third preseason game…while Brock Osweiler is not included
Based upon many reports from OTAs and training camp, this may not be the “boldest” prediction, as far as Kizer is concerned. Earlier this week, my colleague Nick Dudukovich wrote about Kizer’s chances to start Week 1 of the regular season.
Therefore, this is not what is intended to be bold.
What is, however, is the idea of second-year pro Kevin Hogan beating out the $72-million-man Osweiler. Hogan threw just 26 passes last year while appearing in four games for the Browns. However, one specific part of his skill-set may help him stick on the roster.
Against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7 last year, Hogan was forced into action after Cody Kessler was injured. The rookie from Stanford completed just 12-of-24 passes for 100 yards and two interceptions per pro-football-reference.com, but he made plays with his legs.
Hogan ripped up Cincy’s defense for 108 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
Knowing just how much head coach Hue Jackson loves his trick plays and versatility, he could find a play or two here and there for Hogan. But why would “a play or two” be worth keeping Hogan over Osweiler?
The Browns already got what they wanted out of Osweiler – the second-round pick that came in the trade. Lets not forget what came first in Cleveland’s press release of the deal.
"“We’re really excited to acquire a second round draft choice in this trade,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. “Draft picks are extremely important to our approach in building a championship caliber football team. We are intent on adding competition to every position on our roster and look forward to having Brock come in and compete.”"
Draft picks come up before Osweiler. The Browns do not owe him anything. Kizer and Kessler hold the top two spots on the depth chart. The coaching staff could take a shot on Hogan rather than holding onto Osweiler for no reason.
