The 27th starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns has been named.

Could the Cleveland Browns finally have their answer at quarterback? It is too soon to say, but there is a lot to like with their selection. To no one’s surprise, Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson officially named rookie DeShone Kizer as the Week 1 starter.

Now, we will continue to see rookie pains weekly for a while as Kizer gets more comfortable playing in the NFL. That is expected.

It has been evident for some time now that Kizer displays the most talent along with the most upside. Poor overall play by the other quarterbacks also increased Kizer’s chances to start by default.

The one thing I was hesitant about Kizer starting was the mental aspect. Not that he wouldn’t comprehend certain things, but rather the fact that Cleveland has been known to start and replace rookie and younger quarterbacks (in general) regularly.

That scenario hasn’t been too bad with Jackson but we cannot forget history. Just ask Tim Couch, Johnny Manziel, Colt McCoy, and others. Luckily, Jackson’s comments via The Athletic‘s Zac Jackson.

Barring injury we will be seeing Kizer play all season. The good news with that is he would not have to be concerned about losing his job — that is of course Jackson maintains this stance.

In an ideal world, I would have started Kizer following the bye week versus the Detroit Lions.

Such scenario did not play out but that was more due to Kizer stepping up (although he has a way to go) and the quarterback battle not living up to the hype.

Props to Kizer regarding his development so far.

Kizer was the fourth quarterback selected in April’s draft but he will be the only one to start the first week of the regular season. Take that in accordingly.

Some of Jackson prior quarterbacks he has worked with includes Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, and Carson Palmer. Kizer is more of that mode.

The difference is that he is a more athletic quarterback, unlike Cody Kessler, who was a 2016 pick, who is more like McCoy.

So, as the regular season arrives, be patient with Kizer. He will show some flashes but still make mistakes. In the long run with Jackson’s guidance, Kizer may very well solidify the QB position for a long time.
