Not your same Steelers defense

Pittsburgh is led by veteran defensive lineman Cameron Hayward, who was recently named a captain.

Hayward’s a recognizable name, but this isn’t the same defense you’ve come to know.

After getting waxed by the Patriots in the AFC title game, Pittsburgh is getting more youthful on defense.

James Harrison is 39, and he’s been overtaken by T.J. Watt on the depth chart. Yeah, he’s J.J.’s brother, but he’s never started an NFL game. Will the Steelers’ depth chart reflect what actually happens on Sunday? That remains to be seen.

But watch who play the bulk of the snaps. If it’s Watt, you’ve got to like the Browns chances, just because of the inexperience.

Linebacker Bud Dupree is 24, but he’s hardly Joey Porter or Harrison yet. Dupree recorded 4.5 sacks last season. Dupree rated 50.7 on Pro Football Focus last season. That’s considered poor.

Artie Burns, 25, will start opposite of Haden. As a rookie, he rated “average” in PFF’s final 2016 rankings.

There are veterans, too, of course.

The Browns don’t believe Joe Haden can play anymore, but Pittsburgh’s going to give the veteran a chance. Expect Haden to be tested early.

Veteran Mike Mitchell, 30, will handle free safety. He also rated “average” last season (79.2), and he’s now on the wrong side of 30.

While Pittsburgh has some names you recognize, this isn’t Dick LaBeau’s defense. The Browns will get some chances to score.
