Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett can’t turn the team around by himself
By Ryan Rosko
When defensive end Myles Garrett plays for the Cleveland Browns that will be a welcomed sight but he can’t do it alone.
The anticipation of Myles Garrett’s debut continues to increase for the Cleveland Browns and their fans. As great as a prospect Garrett is though, this is not the NBA… Garrett can only do so much by himself.
Yes, defensive end is a cornerstone position but expecting Garrett to be a dominate force from the start is unfair. There are issues on defense Garrett can help with, specifically the impact of the pass rush on a consistent basis.
However, the inability to cover tight ends and inconsistent secondary play will have to be adjusted in other ways. That said, based off of what Garrett has shown in college leading him to being drafted first, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding him.

Still, from his numerous moves as a push rusher to his freakish athletic ability no wonder many just sits back and envisions Garrett as the next star defensive end. For those hoping that he is not like former Browns defensive end Courtney Brown, I hear you and I’m with you, but don’t worry.
Garrett has not played yet and that hurts his case against being the next Brown, but just wait until he is healthy. Garrett had an ankle injury last season in college but he still played 10 games and the stats were very comparable to past seasons.
Meanwhile, Brown had one injury after another in the NFL and in 40 percent of his seasons in Cleveland he played in five or fewer games.
Garrett is a traditional defensive end, unlike Oakland Raiders’ Khalil Mack. Yet, both have similarities and Mack is now being utilized more and more exclusively along the line as his career continues.
One thing to point out with the former Buffalo product is that it did not take long before NFL offenses realized Mack is a problem for offensive lines.
Soon enough Garrett will get that same respect. Be patient though as it won’t come overnight, especially if the other Browns defenders don’t step their games up.
If (when) quarterback DeShone Kizer gets more help this season then Cleveland could be in line to actually win a few games this season. Until then, I’d be less than optimistic. Eventually Kizer will fix his rookie mistakes from accuracy to holding the ball too long, but he is a promising player.
I hate to say it but assuming the wide receiver position is fixed for next season, Kizer’s development will then be seen in greater detail. As a result, Cleveland won’t have to rely on their defense as the main reason to win games.
In a way once those upgrades are made the duo of Kizer/Garrett could and hopefully will be the next Derek Carr/Mack. Cleveland will have to walk before they can run.

With that in mind, limited expectations for Garrett to start is wise and once he gets his feet wet in regular season games then that will be the time when those expectations can increase both in the short and long-term.
