Each week the something is done by the Cleveland Browns that pushes themselves backwards instead of forward and that must change.

You cannot teach an old dog new tricks and the Cleveland Browns cannot figure out how to acquire and develop their answer at quarterback. Both that saying and the franchise’s inability to overcome that hurdle are things we can take to the bank.

On Wednesday, Browns head coach announced the latest setback to the team: He benched rookie DeShone Kizer in favor of backup Kevin Hogan. One word comes to mind just thinking about that: Wow (and not in a good way). Instead, it’s wow, Cleveland actually went down that road again.

Hogan is decent… as a backup. I know Jackson is trying to win but Hogan has never started a game yet and Kizer came close to winning two games already. Besides, if Jackson and company really believes Hogan can win in Cleveland, he’s dreaming!

It is only a matter of time before Jackson’s tenure could come to an end if that is the case. If you have changed the channel prior to Hogan coming into games, here’s an interesting tidbit: Go back and watch the kind of offensive plays Jackson is calling for Kizer and compare that to the ones called for Hogan.

The calls are different and more is placed on Kizer’s shoulders. Now that Kizer is on the bench (after just four and a half games), Hogan is now the 28th starting quarterback for the Browns since 1999.

That said, Hogan has improved under Jackson’s guidance but not enough to be “the guy”. Kizer will also improve his flaws under Jackson but by removing Kizer now he is playing with fire. The one good thing with Kizer on the bench is that he can work on his flaws… I suppose.

Barring the rare exception, I prefer quarterbacks to fix their issues on the field. Instead, this decision will be a problem for too many reasons. Who in their right mind would bench the best quarterback they have to win a game? The Browns of course.

I can understand the frustration with Kizer and the settling for Hogan. However, it’s not hard to see that the latter isn’t the answer. By making this move, Cleveland will continue to be a popular choice when it comes to NFL stability jokes.

I wonder, how much longer can you stand these types of moves? Also, what will it take for fans to voice their thoughts enough? Would they go as far as not attending games anymore? Well,  First Energy Stadium does have its share of empty seats but enough to the point where fans are not watching anymore or at least stops buying tickets.

Maybe, just maybe Kizer will start again but will he be scarred from the benching? Time will tell but in the meantime, Kizer shouldn’t have been pulled but unfortunately we will have to watch the Browns attempt to be decent on offense.

Hogan already had a year in the offense while Kizer came in this season as a rookie. He has growing pains and now Kizer’s development is delayed and the search for an answer at quarterback also continues. Oh, the joy of being a Browns fans right?
