The Cleveland Browns made John Dorsey their new general manager, and the veteran football evaluator comes to the team endorsed by Bill Parcels.

The Cleveland Browns really wanted John Dorsey. Owner Jimmy Haslam felt a sense or urgency to make the hire, and got a deal done, less than 15 hours after firing Sashi Brown as VP of football operations.

Haslam has been criticized for not taking the advice of experienced NFL lifers when it comes to making football hires, but it appears, that’s not the case this time.

Dorsey’s former mentor with the Packers, Ron Wolf, “strongly pitched” his protege to Haslam, according to ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi. Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells also consulted with Haslam, and recommended Dorsey, Grossi wrote.

The fact of the matter is that Dorsey’s hire is being pitched as a slam-dunk hire.

But Browns fans have been down this road to nowhere many a time before.

Dorsey is a step in the right direction. He’s an A+ talent evaluator which is huge, considering the haul of draft picks the Browns possess heading into the 2018 draft.

With that said, there are questions about whether he’s capable of handling an organization and being the face of football operations.

As far as ownership goes, it’s hard to argue with the decision Jimmy Haslam made.

With Dorsey on board, the franchise finally has someone it can trust to make crucial personnel decisions.

No more delegating. No more collaborative think tanks. No more general managers learning on the job.

Dorsey’s in charge of the roster. He’s earned that right based of his 26-year NFL career.

Haslam should be applauded for the move, but he’s not out of the woods yet.

Dorsey has no working relationship with Hue Jackson.

That’s not to say they duo can’t succeed together, but one must wonder about Haslam’s future.

Hue Jackson just won a mega-game of tug-of-war, will the Browns be embattled in another one sooner than later if the two sides disagree on the direction of the team.

That remains to be seen, but as for right now, the Browns took a step in the right direction. Dorsey’s loaded with picks and there are some good, young players currently wearing orange helmets.

Like his predecessor, he’ll be charged with finding a franchise quarterback–something that proved to be the death nail of Sashi Brown.

Don’t kid your self, the heater on Dorsey’s hot seat starts with the 2018 NFL Draft and whomever he chooses at No. 1.
