The latest pivot of the Cleveland Browns’ search for an offensive coordinator has turned to a coach that has had success in the past as an OC.

The Cleveland Browns‘ search for an offensive coordinator has heated up in the past week with two former head coaches reportedly on the front office’s radar.

First, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Mularkey was mentioned as an option.

Now, the latest name to surface is former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo, according to cleveland.com writer Mary Kay Cabot.

McAdoo, who guided the Giants to a 13-15 record under his tenure, interviewed on Tuesday in Berea. The Browns’ offensive coordinator search started with former Cincinnati Bengals OC Ken Zampese, but head coach Hue Jackson thought he would be a better fit as QB coach.

The Browns then brought in Houston Texans QB coach Sean Ryan, but he ended up returning to Houston.

Browns GM John Dorsey and McAdoo have a strong history working together. The two spent seven years in Green Bay from 2006-12, which ended up in a Super Bowl title in 2010.

McAdoo left for the Giants in 2013-14.

There, according to nfl.com, he helped improve the Giants’ offense from 28th to 10th. New York then took another leap from the 10th ranked offense to eighth. McAdoo’s play-calling then landed him the head coaching job, after the Giants departed with Tom Coughlin.

McAdoo tied the Giants record for most wins by a first-year head coach, going 11-5 in 2016. New York also made the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

The next season did not go according to plan. Injuries to Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, and bad offensive line play derailed the season and he was fired after the Giants started 2-10.

Dorsey and McAdoo’s history certainly bodes well for a team trying to build a culture around the same ideals. Multiple front office personnel from Dorsey’s time on the Packers have resurfaced in Cleveland.

It should be no surprise if they turn to McAdoo to be their eyes and ears on the coaching staff. If hired, McAdoo would also be reuniting with Browns wide receivers’ coach Adam Henry, who was on the Giant’s coaching staff in 2016-17.
