Charles Gaines, CB

Charles Gaines was a sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns during the 2015 NFL Draft. The former Louisville Cardinals defensive back only played one season in the NFL. He was released in 2016.

Gaines wasn’t drafted by former vice president of football operations Sashi Brown. Being that he was a late round pick competing with recently drafted/signed defensive backs, it was just a matter of time before he was let go.

Gaines, who is a former wide receiver, was a subtraction due to the numbers game. Following his tenure in Cleveland, Gaines was signed by the Buffalo Bills and then the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, he did not accumulate any stats nor playing time with either team. Had he been able to have an NFL career, the ceiling was never high. Gaines had the potential of a CB3 maybe CB4 at best.

Although he couldn’t make it in the NFL, Gaines could be of use to an XFL in some way on either side of the football.

In six career games with Cleveland, Gaines started four of them. In the lone season he actually played in, Gaines racked up 15 tackles, two pass deflections, and one pass deflection.
