Desmond Harrison, LT

Desmond Harrison will likely be the backup left tackle heading into Week 1, meaning he’s taken a step ahead of Greg Robinson for the spot should the Browns decide to keep only one extra tackle.

Robinson could still very well end up making the squad, though.

Harrison’s emergence spells trouble for Shon Coleman, a third-round pick in 2016 who was chosen by Sashi Brown.

Coleman started training camp as the starting left tackle and now finds himself as the third string right tackle before final roster cuts are to be made Saturday.

The Browns second-team offensive line had their best performance by far of the preseason.

Remember how Nick Chubb couldn’t gain anything in Preseason Week 1? Well the Browns second line, which featured Harrison and Robinson at tackles, as well as Austin Corbett at right guard, made it possible for Matthew Dayes to hit pay dirt on his 42-yard touchdown run.

Harrison is listed at 6-5, 295 pounds, which is unusual because it’s so rare to see an offensive lineman under 300 pounds.

He played collegiately at West Georgia after transferring from Texas. He signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent last May.

How Harrison develops may play a role in Joel Bitonio‘s long-term future at tackle.

The former second-round pick, who moved to tackle this offseason, is expected to hold down the position in 2018, but the future remains cloudy. Perhaps Austin Corbett gets to the point where the Browns move him to tackle, putting Bitonio back at guard where he’s a Pro Bowl level player.

Or perhaps, Harrison emerges. That’s a lot to ask of a guy who wasn’t even drafted, but I’m just spitballing.

The Browns likely drafted a left tackle of the future in this spring’s draft now that the whole quarterback problem appears to have been figured out.
