1. Bucks’ offense will outclass the Beavers

The Buckeyes made big moves last season to fix their troubles on offense as they signed on former San Francisco 49ers‘ quarterbacks coach Ryan Day to be the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and former Indiana Hoosiers‘ head coach Kevin Wilson to coach the offense. These changes helped the Buckeyes’ offense turn into a prolific point-scoring machine. The team scored over 48 points in a game eight times last season.

There are many indications that the Buckeyes will be even better this season even with the big change at quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins will take the reigns at quarterback to start the season in place of the legendary four-year starter J.T. Barrett. Popular perception over the years has been that having Barrett at quarterback has limited the vertical threat that the Buckeyes’ offense could be. The truth is that the Buckeyes haven’t been that type of offense, especially in the Urban Meyer era.

Yes, the Buckeyes won the National Championship due to Cardale Jones being a vertical gunslinger but that was just a situational tactic. It’s no secret that Urban Meyer has kept the passing game close to the vest as shorter routes and a tough running game that heavily includes the quarterback has been the meta for this offense.

The rise of Dwayne Haskins and his abilities has hinted toward a new era in the way this offense works. Even last year, the Buckeyes looked to be opening up in the passing game and stretching the field. The play calling looked much more aggressive than previously and more points were being scored.

The only limitation seemed to be the arm of J.T. Barrett and his play style. Haskins proved in his minimal time on the field last season that he is very capable of firing the ball down the field confidently. His big arm combined with more aggressive play calling by the new coaching regime has given the fans much to be excited about.

This game is much more important than everyone realizes. Yes, Oregon State will most likely not give much competition on Saturday but that’s not the entire focus. This game will mark the beginning of a new era for the Buckeyes.

If Haskins is anything like what is expected then this new aggressive vertical offense that the Buckeyes have been inching toward will be showcased in some capacity on Saturday.
