In Cleveland Browns rumors, a chance may be made if the offense isn’t fixed. But that may involve firing Todd Haley and not Hue Jackson.

Everyone in the world expects Hue Jackson to be fired if the Cleveland Browns don’t start winning some games.

That starts with fixing an offense that sputtered for three quarters agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday. Behind Baker Mayfield, Cleveland did enough to rally in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fizzled again during overtime.

The obvious decision is to fire Jackson, who now carries a 3-35-1 record. But if the offense isn’t improved, Hue may save his job, because it could be Todd Haley who is out of a job, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

"“But another option is is to remove Haley. That would also be under consideration. Those involved here have wondered when Jackson speaks, does Haley listen? Jackson has a woeful record, but is still in charge.”"

All the words to spill out out of the Hue-Haley spat lead back to that episode of “Hard Knocks” where Haley questioned Jackson’s decision to give players days off.

Jackson tried to establish himself as the leader, stating that he was “driving the bus.”

Yet here we are, three months later, wondering why the head coach and offensive coordinator can’t get on the same page.

Rapoport’s reporting here is interesting because until those aforementioned sentences, Hue’s career seemed to be in the crosshairs.

That seemed particularly true after Jackson said following the Bucs’ loss that he was going to insert himself more into the offensive gameplan. He was signing a different tune the next day–perhaps after he had been “talked to” by his superiors?

He was pressed by the media if he goes over the script of plays the Browns use to start a game and the overall game plan. He said he signs off on all of it.

If that’s true, what’s left for him to do besides play calls, which is something he said he won’t be doing.

Jackson hired Haley, but it was clearly a shotgun marriage. Hue’s expertise, and the reason he rose among the ranks to get head coaching jobs is ability to run an offense. That was taken away from him, something thad had to serve as a professional blow.

The Browns’ head coach is a survivor. He’s lived through 0-16. He’s carried on past Sashi Brown. But excuses are wearing thin. Can he survive one more time?
