Once upon a time, Browns could rush the passser

The Browns basically abaondoned the pass rush against the Steelers last week, and got burned for it. They were credited with just one quarterback hit on Ben Roethlisberger in the official box score.

Gregg Williams has got to put more pressure on Mahomes.

And he should get the chance.

Mahomes holds onto the ball about 2.87 seconds per throw. He takes the fifth most time to unload the ball in the NFL. But hey, when you’re unloading 40-yard bombs all the of time and your line gives the time to do so, why not?

A pass rush from the Browns’ front four would dramatically alter this game, even if Garret, Emmanuel Ogbah, Denard Avery and Larry Ogunjobi just force him to get rid of the ball quicker…it could make all the difference.

Garrett criticized his defensive coordinator, who jus took over as interim head coach for going away from the pass rush, so it’s not clear as to how Williams will react.

He deployed a three-safety look early on against Ben Roethlisberger and had success with it in the first quarter. After that, the defense didn’t look so great.

A player to watch in this one is Larry Ogunjobi. You just haven’t heard his name very often over the last month. If he can create pressure from up the middle, Garrett and Ogbah should be free to make plays from the edge.

Be worried about Williams blitzing, though. Mahomes is good enough to beat those blitzes because you’re doing him a favor by taking an extra defender out of the secondary.

After a total dud against the Steelers, look for the Browns pass rush to be better than it was.
