5 current NFL coaches who could coach Cleveland Browns in 2019
5. Gregg Williams, Interim Browns
If Gregg Williams does the unthinkable and pulls off six-straight wins, the Browns are going to have a tough decision to make regarding the future of their franchise.
Browns fans have to know Williams well over the past few years. He talks a good game and is a supreme motivator.
His defense is also one of the few things that’s worked right in 2018, as the unit leads the NFL in takeaways.
By hiring Williams permanently, Cleveland gets an “SOB” head coach who would pair up with an offensive coordinator to develop Mayfield.
Williams’ one shot as a head coach, prior to the interim gig he holds now, was with the Buffalo Bills from 2001-2003. He went 3–13, 8–8, and 6–10. We all know how bad Buffalo’s been the last 20 years, so no, Williams wasn’t given a lot of talent to work with.
Williams went on to be coach the Saints to a Super Bowl as defensive coordinator, and he probably couldn’t have forecasted he’d be getting this head coaching shot following his role in the “Bounty Gate” scandal.
He’s probably a long shot, but if he wins and Mayfield somehow miraculously plays better than he has the past three to four weeks, Williams will be a serious contender to keep the job.
