Rumors: 3 New names in Cleveland Browns coaching search
Adam Gase
Adam Gase has done OK since leaving the Denver Broncos nest, but the once-thought of genius who helped Peyton Manning in the final year of his career hasn’t helped Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins take the next step.
So with Black Monday approaching, Gase’s future is in doubt, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
And if he’s fired, he’ll have one big fan sitting in the owner’s box at FirstEnergy Stadium in Jimmy Haslam, according to Rapoport.
Haslam “has long been a fan,” Rapoport write, and the scribe sees Gase emerging as one of the top-head coaching candidates.
Would Gase look like more of a genius if he had a better quarterback? Tannehill’s proved to be a mid-tier quarterback throughout his career, meaning he’s good enough to win some games and possibly get his team into the playoffs every now and then.
But as far as consistently being a Super Bowl contender? That hasn’t been the case.
So might put the onus on Gase for not helping him make the next step.
I’m not one of those. It would be exciting to watch Gase operate with a talent such as Mayfield.
Gase name being tied to the Browns would be scintillating, but ultimately, I think he keeps his job in south beach.
• As for Josh McDaniels, his name will be floated until it isn’t. I know he has Cleveland ties and is a John Carrol alum, but I’m not all that sure why everyone gets so excited about him.
He’s already failed as a head coach once and hasn’t won anything without Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, save for a miracle playoff game from Tim Tebow.
Plus, don’t forget what he did to Indianapolis, leaving the Colts high and dry. Is this the personality you want to bring in to sculpt the future of the Browns?
• Mike McCarthy is the other former NFL coach being battered about because of his ties to Browns’ GM John Dorsey.
Some think he can pull and Andy Reid and resurrect his career with his next team. Maybe, maybe not.
Dorsey may not have the pull in the Browns’ power structure that some seem to think he has, though, which may hurt McCarthy’s chances.
