5. Sign Anthony Barr

Barr, Vikings’ linebacker is set to hit free agency, and the Browns, armed with the fourth-most cap space in the NFL, could do a lot to shore up their linebacking corps with the addition of Anthony Barr.

Pro Football Focus graded Barr as its 26th rated linebacker (71.4). He particularly graded out well against run. He’s not great in pass coverage, but decent enough.

Plus, he grades out better than the man he’d be replacing, Jamie Collins, who was PFF’s 57th rated linebacker (62.3).

Barr turns 27 in March. Signing him frees up the Browns to focus on the defensive line in the draft, although strengthening the linebacking corps even more could also be an option.

K.J. Wright could be another option at middle linebacker as the Seattle linebacker gets set to hit free agency after the season.

Wright was right behind Barr on PFF’s grade sheet, rated as the 27th highest graded linebacker in the game this past season.

The 29-year-old missed a good chunk of the season due to injury but did return for the final half of the campaign and played in Seattle’s playoff game.

Carolina’s Thomas Davis could also be an option. The 35-year-old ended the season as the 18th highest graded linebacker in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, and he’s set to be a free agent (74.2).

He’s particularly decent when dropping into coverage.

With that said, his age is a concern, as he’s a 14-year veteran. That could mean the Browns could get him an affordable price, and having depth at the position certainly never hurts.
