Cleveland Indians’ starter Trevor Bauer gave a heck-of-an interview to Sports Illustrated, saying he won’t be on the Tribe in 2020.

Cleveland Indians starter Trevor Bauer gave an interview to Sports Illustrated, and author Ben Reiter wrote, frankly, a piece I couldn’t put down.

Naturally, the long-form story has been broken down to the umpteenth degree by the blogosphere.

Various headlines to emerge from the story: “Trevor Bauer takes shot at Red Sox ace Chris Sale“, via NESN; Indians’ Trevor Bauer is the world’s worst boyfriend, via the New York Post; “Trevor Bauer says he harassed a woman online to show it’s ok to ‘Stand up to bullies'”, courtesy of Deadspin.

This blog’s takeaway: Reiter wrote Bauer is certain the Indians will trade him following the season.

"“I won’t be with the Indians next year,” Bauer said."

Bauer’s name was kicked about trade rumors throughout the offseason, but Corey Kluber‘s name was much more prominent, at least in the reports being written by the national press.

Bauer could be in line to get a raise next year in arbitration after being awarded $13 million just days before pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training. The Indians scaled back on payroll this season and an influx of cash doesn’t look like its coming after 2019.

At 28, Bauer’s younger. Perhaps teams will want him more than Kluber, 32, because it appears Bauer is just hitting his prime.

Reiter’s article is filled with some sensation stuff the casual fan will eat up, but I finished the article feeling pumped about the Indianas chances in 2019. Heck, I want to know if a healthy Bauer would’ve won the Cy Young last season.

He better do this year, because after reading Reiter’s story, it’ll be a letdown if the Santa Clarita native doesn’t pull it off.

Plus, dangling a “Cy Young Award” winner will help the Indians a great degree when negotiating a prospect package for Bauer next winter.

Reiter also touched on Bauer’s willingness to sign one year deals. He’s a different dude. This comes as a surprise to no one who has followed the Tribe even just a little bit the past few years.

Where will Bauer go via trade and where will he sign? Will his new team let him be him? He was very forthright as to how the Diamondbacks treated him after his lone advocate in Arizona was hired away by a different team.

Even when he’s not with the Tribe, Bauer will be worth watching and Dos Equis would be smart to get him to an endorsement deal, because he’s certainly the most interesting man in baseball.
