Cleveland Cavaliers: 4 impacts John Beilein hire will have on Cavs
4. Candidates still assistant options
The Cavs looked at a lot of younger coaches with backgrounds in player development, which make sense as the Cavs rebuild from LeBron James‘ departure last summer.
Jordi Fernandez, Alex Jansen, Steve Hetzel, Wes Unsled Jr. were all reported to be candidates for the head coaching job.
They may not get the head coaching gig now, but these individuals could be in line for a lucrative top assistant post.
"“It would not surprise me if you see some of these names resurface” Windhorst said, via TheLandonDemand.com (4:36)."
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has a history of opening up the checkbook for a top assistant, making Tyronn Lue the highest paid lieutenant when Cleveland hired David Blatt in 2014.
Perhaps the Cavaliers though they’d save some money if Lue would’ve taken the Lakers job, but even though he didn’t, it wouldn’t be surprising to see one of these assistants end up in Cleveland with a hefty salary.
Additionally, Beilein is 66 and signed a five-year contract. How often does a coach, especially a Cavs coach, see the end of their contract? We’re all pulling for him because it means he’ll have been successful if he does.
However, the next Cavs coach could very well end up on the bench this season.
