Cleveland Browns: 5 preseason position battles taking shape for 2019
2. Burnett vs Whitehead, SS
Both Morgan Burnett and Jermaine Whitehead hail from the Green Bay Packers organization, which used to be the home of current Browns’ assistant GM Eliot Wolf, as well as top personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith.
Whitehead played in 24 games with Green Bay over the past two season, and Cleveland.com’s Terry Pluto recently highlighted the buzz he’s catching.
"“I keep hearing, ‘Don’t ignore this guy.'”"
Burnett was with the Steelers a season ago, starting two games, but spent the bulk of his career (2010-2017) with the Packers.
The Browns are looking for a replacement for Jabrill Peppers, who was one of the pieces used to acquire Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants last March.
New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks had big plans for Peppers, and was the one player singled out by the new scheme czar before he was traded.
The Browns also made plans for the future of the position by drafting Sheldrick Redwine, but it’s probably more likely he cuts his teeth a little on special teams before cracking the starting lineup.
