Cleveland Browns: 5 Biggest offseason workout winners
These five players should be counted as the biggest offseason workout winners, as the Cleveland Browns recently wrapped OTAs and minicamp.
The Cleveland Browns wrapped up offseason workouts and won’t re-convene again until Training Camp commences in late July.
OTAs, and the mini camp that followed, drew plenty of attention, especially with the rival of Odell Beckham Jr. at the Browns’ facility this past week.
Football’s the ultimate team sport, though, and there were plenty of players in orange helmet that don’t have the star power of OBJ, but are looking to contribute in 2019.
Here’s five Browns who put themselves on the radar and should be considered winners of the team’s offseason workout program.
1. Jermaine Whitehead, S
With new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks on board, the Browns reportedly spent considerable time with four down lineman, two linebackers and three safeties.
The scheme sets up Jermaine Whitehead to be a major contributor for the Browns in 2019.
Damarious Randall and Morgan Burnett are s expected to be the safeties on the field in Week 1, b but don’t be surprised if Wilks calls for the three-safety look, depending on who the Browns happen to be playing.
Whitehead played just six defensive snaps in seven games for the Browns last season, but just weeks ago, Wilks singled the Auburn product out as a “leader.”
Whitehead bounced around with the 49ers and Ravens before landing with the Green Bay Packers for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Browns’ personnel executives Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith were working for the Packers at the time, so they know Whitehead better than anybody.
The 4-2-3 defensive setup will be intriguing to watch as the already-pass happy NFL tries to air it out even more. Additionally, Linebacker is probably the Browns’ biggest weaknesses, so if coaches get results out of a new scheme at the benefit of a new scheme, then more power to them.
