Cleveland Browns: 5 players whose stock is down after Redskins win
4. Drew Stanton, QB
How does Drew Stanton keep the backup quarterback gig? He’s here to mentor Baker Mayfield, which he did an excellent job of during the Heisman winner’s rookie season.
In his short amount time in the preseason opener, Stanton completed a couple of drag routes of the middle, which inflated his passing totals.
Some throws were bad, such as that fade that Antonio Callaway. Callaway wouldn’t even come close to catching it had the defensive back not tipped it. It should’ve been intercepted, but Callaway almost turned it into six.
Stanton was his usual inaccurate self, going 3-of-8. It had me begging for Garrett Gilbertto ball out.
Gilbert was OK. It took a while for him to get going. He should’ve led the Browns to a field-goal try on his 2-minute drill toward the end of the second half. A holding on Dontrell Hilliard nixed it.
There isn’t officially a backup QB battle, but if it is something the coaches are paying attention to, Gilbert didn’t do anything to hurt to himself.
