A writer from Baker Mayfiel college town took the quarterback to task for his GQ comments. Here’s what was said about the Cleveland Browns QB.

A writer from The Oklahoman, a newspaper whose beat includes the Sooners, had a simple message for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield: “Grow up.”

The author, Berry Tramel is one of many media members taking Mayfield to task for his comments to GQ, but his focus is on the apology the former Sooner quarterback owes to the Oklahoma athletic director and coach Lincoln Riley and not what was said about Daniel Jones.

In GQ, Mayfield talked about how he never really wanted to apologize for attempting to plant the Oklahoma flag at Ohio Stadium in 2017.

But the powers-that-be at OU wanted it done. Tramel assumes AD Joe Castiglione was one of those higher-ups. Mayfield obliged and Riley went as far to say that it was Mayfield’s idea.

Tramel makes the point that Riley was standing up for Mayfield, as he always did, only to be thrown under the bus two years later as someone who didn’t tell the truth.

Mayfield also admitted his apology was “zero” heartfelt. These things led the writer to question how  the Heisman winner could throw the OU staff, which supported him, even after the Kansas “crotch grab,” under the bus.

This isn’t about the flag thing. I never understood why it was a big deal and I’m a Buckeye fan. In sports, I tend to follow the time-tested adage; To the victors, go the spoils.

Tramel agrees, that too much was made of the incident. However, he contends that in abandoning his Sooner support staff in the GQ story, he showed immaturity.

"“There comes a time when young men need to grow up, and for Mayfield, that time is now. Or last year, when the Browns made him the face of their beleaguered franchise. Being interesting is good. Being provocative is OK. Being a rascal who makes enemies is silly in the hardened world of pro football.”"

This article will be bashed by just about every single card carrying member of the Dawg Pound and that’s fine. Mayfield’s got a hall pass that shows no signs of expiring.

The Browns are relevant again and he’s the reason why as expectations for the second-year veteran are through the roof. To be the quarterback in Cleveland when the Browns are good….well, It’s got to be as close anyone can come to being a king, or a Kennedy.

As for the comments about Daniel Jones, Mayfield said his “mind” was “blown.” I’m not sure how you take that out of context.

Baker’s not someone who walks comments back, though. Running to Instagram to set the record straight on controversy he stirs up in the press isn’t what Mayfield does.

This incident shall pass and in the end, all it does is add more fuel to the Browns’ hype machine. The people who want to see the Browns lose will want to see them lose even more.

This will pass, but in Cleveland Mayfield has only endeared himself more to Browns’ fans as the “everyman” quarterback with a chip on his shoulder who can shot gun a Miller Lite at a moment’s notice.

EVERYBODY thought the Giants were insane for taking Jones. Baker either had the same reaction as you, or someone you talked to that night.
