5. Money Mitchell

Being without starting corners Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams was the storyline of the pregame. Viewers not familiar with the Browns’ depth envisioned Jared Goff carving up a string of secondary backups.

Browns fans knew though. We all thought Terrance Mitchell was going to start the season opposite Ward until we saw Williams out there.

Mitchell is better than average player, capable of holding his own and he showed that Sunday night. He immediately showed out on the Rams’ first scoring possession. With Goff looking poised to lead the Rams down the field for a touchdown, Mitchell came up with a huge tackle of Cooper Kupp, taking him down for a loss and forcing the Rams to kick a field goal.

That was one of two tackles for a loss made by Mitchell. He ended his night with four total tackles.

Kupp would be the secondary’s biggest annoyance of the night, as Jermaine Whitehead found his stock plummeting after allowing this scoring play to the Rams’ slot receiver.

Mitchell worked his way into my consciousness during Hard Knocks last season. He was relentless in his defense of Jarvis Landry, which irked the veteran wideout. At the time, Mitchell was fighting for a job and was obviously willing to do whatever it took to secure one.

He’s the Browns now, thankfully, and depending on how quickly these hamstring issues last for Williams and Ward, we may be seeing more of him down the road.
