Cleveland Indians: 5 realistic free agents worth targeting for 2020
Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B
Contract The Players Tribune, because Asdrubal Cabrera should start penning his “I’m Coming Home” column after he wraps the season in the World Series as a member of the Washington Nationals.
Cabrera, who hit 18 home runs a season ago, could take over at second base, which is the position he broke into the big leagues at, as a member of a Tribe team that came within a game of reaching the World Series back in 2007.
During the regular season, Cabrera hit .260 (.783 OPS) with 18 home runs and 91 RBIs. If that seems like a lot of RBIs for this veteran, you’re right. He was one off his career high of 92, which was set during the 2011 season as a member of the Indians.
It’s also worth pointing out he hit .279 with 29 RBIs when there were two outs with runners in scoring position. The Indians were 18th in MLB in this department, batting .236 as a team.
Cabrera played the following season on a one-year pact, earning him $3.5 million. He’ll be 34 by the time the 2020 season starts, so chances are he’s not going to be signing a long-term lucrative deal.
The Indians should bust down to the door to give him that same contract. Perhaps he gets a little more based off this past season.
Either way, the Indians should be interested just because he can play second and third. Jose Ramirez doesn’t want too lip flop, so stick JRAM at the Hot Corner. Cabrera can move there if needed.
