One NFL insider doesn’t see Odell Beckham Jr. forcing a trade from the Cleveland Browns because he’s not a confrontational guy. He wants others to do the work.
Odell Beckham trade rumors promise to dominate what could be a tumultuous offseason for the forever downtrodden Cleveland Browns.
OBJ is reportedly telling teams “Come get me,” in an effort to get out of Cleveland moving forward. Jarvis Landry was rumored to be saying the same things, to the Cardinals, of all teams.
Both addressed these rumors in their scrums with the press yesterday, and OBJ even tried to joke about rumors, saying that he had been talking to CFL teams, before taking a more serious tone as he denied the rumors.
"“It’s done. It’s old. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be here. We’re gonna figure this thing out. It’s just too special to leave,” Beckham said."
Before you get too excited about OBJ “taking a stand” and pleading his allegiance to the Browns, it was interesting to see Jay Glazer’s mailbag, which was published the day before Beckham’s press conference.
Galzer wrote that we can’t assume OBJ is going to push his way out of Cleveland, because he’s under contract. “It’s not up to him–it’s up to [the Browns],” Galzer wrote.
Glazer continued, for The Athletic, writing that OBJ isn’t a “confrontational guy.”
"“Odell won’t go to the front office and do anything to push himself out. When I reported he was telling teams to come get him, that was for other teams to go do the work, not him. He’s not a confrontational guy.”"
Glazer continued, upset that some were not taking his initial report, which aired on the Fox pregame show ahead of Week 14, seriously.
"“It’s funny because now people are questioning what I’m saying, but why would there be any question? The Browns haven’t used him right. He’s extremely talented, and yet they play him to be incredibly ineffective, which he is not. He is a Pro Bowler and a difference-maker. They don’t utilize his talents.”"
While Beckham may not march into the Browns offices and demand a trade, there’s always the chance the go the NBA player route. And by that I mean cryptic social media messages and telling other teams to get him out of Cleveland.
As Glazer noted, he’s putting his trade interest out there and he doesn’t have to go to the front office demanding a trade.
There’s no telling what the Browns will do with Beckham this offseason. Chances are, they’ll keep him. After this season, he’ll still be under contract for four more years.
There’s always the chance a team could make a “Godfather” type offer, giving the Browns the sun, the moon and the sky. With that said, I doubt Beckham would be able to command a first-round pick at the present time.
