In the span of a few hours, the Browns were linked in two trades with the Seahawks

On Monday, two rumors involving the Cleveland Browns and the Seattle Seahawks broke their way onto the interwebs. One involving Myles Garrett and a 6th round draft pick for Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright and a 2nd and 7th round draft pick in return. This rumor was unilaterally shot down, as it has no real basis outside of a Reddit post.
A trade for Garrett is always possible, no player is entirely untouchable. A situation could shift at any minute causing the Browns to re-think their stance on Garrett. That’s the nature of the NFL. Yet, assuming everything stays the status quo, the Browns and Garrett see no reason to end their relationship. Especially not for a 31-year-old and a second-round pick. Garrett and Baker Mayfield are as untouchable as a player gets. To trade him for an aging vet and two-non-first-round picks is just insulting. What would it take to get Garrett? Two first-round picks, preferably in the same year, one all-pro starter, one regular starter, and a team’s favorite special teams player.
And $5,000,000 in cash. And a new popcorn machine. And that team’s CFO’s parking spot for all away games. And cotton candy. For life. And the XFL’s assets. And the AAF’s assets. Two minor league hockey teams, and one struggling Major League franchise. Then we’ll talk.
As for the second rumor? Well, this one might be more credible but maybe not. Mind-boggling, right? This one comes from former Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Chris Simms, son of legendary New York Giant Phil Simms. He made a claim on the May 7 episode of Pro Football Talk that there was a rumor in 2018 that Seattle was looking to trade Russell Wilson to the Cleveland Browns for at least the first-overall pick in that year’s draft; which ended up being Baker Mayfield.
Wilson would’ve been 29 at the time of the offer, heading into his age-30 season. As good as Wilson is, there’s no telling how many years he has left on his legs, and you want more than a four or five-year window with a quarterback. Especially one that costs a No. 1 overall pick to get. Also, Wilson is arguably the greatest sports-star in not just the Seahawks organization but in all of Seattle. Had Ken Griffey Jr. won a World Series, it’d be a close race.
So to think there’s any truth to that old rumor is asinine. Sure, maybe it was all smoke and mirrors by Seattle, or maybe the guy who told Simms was flat out lying, but either way, it’s a trade that doesn’t make any sense.
Two whacky-ass Seattle-Cleveland trade rumors in one day. What are the odds?
