Trading for Dwayne Haskins is a beyond silly idea for the Browns

The Cleveland Browns were a team that NBC’s Ryan Holmer suggested should trade for Dwayne Haskins and that’s just the silliest idea one could come up with.

If Kevin Stefanski doesn’t feel like Baker Mayfield is his guy, whatever. It’s his career, he has to do what’s best for him. So if names like Matthew Stafford or Dak Prescott or whoever pops up in the next few months as a possible replacement, that’d make sense. No one would be too annoyed at those names. They’re mostly still young, efficient, and can move the chains. Sure, those would seem like the right type of names to go after for a new quarterback. Dwayne Haskins isn’t in that tier.

Haskins isn’t in any tier.

Haskins is not a good player, not yet, maybe not ever. He’s a guy that a rebuilding team should take a run at, or a team like the Colts, who have an aging veteran and a good offensive line. Someone they can groom to see if he’s any good. Other teams that make sense are the Buccanears, 49ers, and the Cowboys. You know what team doesn’t make sense? The Browns.

Firstly, the Browns have an average backup who’s making too much money already in Case Keenum. They at least know that Keenum is, well, “fine”. Haskins didn’t “beat out” Keenum when they were on the same team last year, as much as Washington wanted to see what Haskins could do. Turns out, not much. The debate about how good Mayfield will be is a topic that will rage until he retires and probably for 20 years after that, but there is no debate about Mayfield and Keenum being better options than Haskins.

Despite Stephen A. Smith saying otherwise (what was he doing), Haskins is a subpar athlete. More Drew Brees than Josh Allen. He’s not known to for his ability to create with his feet and his combine times don’t’ lend one to believe he’s a dynamic playmaker with anything other than his arm. For someone so big and imobile, his passing ability hasn’t been anywhere close to what it should be. Trading for Haskins is a waste of a draft pick, or roster spot.

It’s just absurd to even contemplate that move for a team like the Browns.
