Cavs Rumors: No trade market for Kevin Love may actually be a good thing
By Chad Porto
It looks like the Cavs aren’t moving on from Kevin Love at the moment, as there are rumors that there is no trade market for the former All-Star.
If you were hoping that the Cavs would make a move to trade Kevin Love this offseason, hold up. A new report coming from John Hollinger of the Athletic talked to Chad Ford on Ford’s NBA Big Board podcast about a list of topics. One of them being Love’s trade market. Hollinger told Ford that Love probably isn’t moving on, saying;
"I don’t think there’s any market for him at all. I had people openly scoff at me last year when I was bringing up Kevin Love trades."
For his credit, Hollinger was the vice president of Memphis Grizzlies’ basketball operations during most of their “Grit and Grind” era. So it’s fair to say that he’s still pretty in touch with those in the NBA and has a pretty good finger on the pulse of the rumor mill. So when he says there’s no market for Love, believe it.
That’s not a bad thing though. The idea of rushing to trade Love when the goal is to make the playoffs always seemed counterproductive. Why would you trade your best player when you’re on the verge of putting everything together? Unless Koby Altman is a walking disaster as a GM, you shouldn’t even think about trading Love if the goal is to compete.
So this rumor might be a blessing in disguise and it’s entirely possible that the Cavs swing a trade to improve the team by acquiring a veteran. If they do, then keeping Love makes the most sense. He’s a big bruising guy, who’s been relatively healthy lately and isn’t someone who’s going to fall off much as he ages.
With his inside-post game and his shooting, he’s the perfect player to have on a team. What the Cavs need is a new point guard, someone who can actually facilitate an offense. If they can trade for one, then keeping Love, even if they didn’t want to, will look like a genius decision.
