Cavs: Kevin Porter Jr. should be on the first trade out of town
By Chad Porto
Cavs guard Kevin Porter Jr. found himself in hot water over the weekend due to a firearm arrest, but now the embattled player is in even more hot water.
What is it with Cleveland athletes recently and their desire to hit people? When it comes to embattled Cavs guard, Kevin Porter Jr, there are no more excuses that can be made; he has to go. What’s the catalyst for such a bold statement? He apparently punched a teenager in the face during a summer altercation that he, his sister, and a third man started.
From WKYC:
"According to a police report from the Cleveland Police, a 26-year-old woman and 19-year-old woman said they were leaving an apartment unit when Porter and his sister, who is not named in the report, approached them. As Porter’s sister and the 26-year-old exchanged words, Porter’s sister allegedly swung and punched the 26-year-old in the face.At the same time, Porter is alleged to have thrown a drink in the face of the 19-year-old before ripping her wig off and punching her in the left side of her face, which caused slight swelling that was visible at the time the police report was taken. Another unidentified suspect, described as a “black male with dreads,” then stepped into the fight and began throwing the 19-year-old around.Three witnesses corroborated the two victims’ stories. Porter left the scene in a black SUV before contact could be made. Police advised the two victims to follow up with the prosecutor."
This follows the report that Porter Jr. was arrested just a few days ago for the improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, along with a charge of failure to control the aforementioned vehicle, which rolled over on Interstate 76 in Mahoning County. He was also cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana as well.
Enough’s enough, he has no business representing Cleveland any longer. Being ok with this type of behavior is repugnant. There is no excuse and its time leagues start prioritizing ethics and morals. Porter Jr. has got to go.
This isn’t even the first time that Porter Jr. has had issues with his conduct either, as he was suspended by USC during his playing days with the university for “personal conduct issues”.
One NBA executive described Porter Jr. to Stadium as “…immature and undisciplined in every way – on and off the floor,” before adding, “He’s wild.” He’d follow it up with one more damning quote, “All he’s done is made people dig more and more…”
Porter Jr. has even acknowledged that people have called him a “hot head’ with “attitude problem(s)”. When he was in high school.
This is not something to change. He’s been in serious trouble at all three levels of basketball and this isn’t likely to change. The Cavs need to cut bait with the problematic guard and hope they can still get something of value back.
Also, rule of thumb, the next time a “super-talented” player like Porter Jr. is supposed to go in the lottery but falls to the end of the first round, just move on and select someone else.
If the Cavs don’t move Porter Jr. by the Draft, then it’ll be officially time to start calling for Koby Altman’s job. Enough is enough. This team deserves to have leadership and a culture that people can respect.
