Indians changing names was the right call but it has to better to work
By Chad Porto
The Indians have let it slip that they’re changing their name this week but the new name has to be better for it to work.
There’s going to be a lot of older Indians fans who are going to be outraged at the news that the Indians are getting a name change. It’s happening, deal with it. There’s nothing you can do and if you are a real fan of the team, it won’t matter. They can be called the Whatchamacallits and I’ll still root for them. After all, the name isn’t what brought me or any other true fan in. It was the players. It was the winning. It was the icons that became something from nothing.
So bring on the new name, just make it a good one.
Firstly, no, the Spiders is an awful name, and considering that 100 million people have arachnophobia in the United States alone, maybe it’s best to not name your team after something a third of Americans have an issue with?
The Blue Sox was mentioned and that’d be cool. Though there is an Australian baseball team already with that name, and they ironically have Manny Ramirez on their squad for 2021.
The Rockers was also once floated by this very website and that would be an easy change.
All that it needs to do to get over with the fanbase is embrace the town and its history and it’ll do fine. Baltimore embraced the Ravens. Tampa embraced the Rays. It’s not a huge deal. Nor is this something that should come as a shock to anyone. This has been months in the making and was all but a forgone conclusion.
I welcome a new name to the team that got me into sports. I just hope that it’s not the Spiders…
