Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield broke Pro Football Focus’s longest charted pass ever, with his Hail Mary to close out the first half against the Ravens.

Baker Mayfield is having a resurgent year with the Cleveland Browns. The third-year quarterback has guided the Browns to their most wins since 2007 and has them on the verge of a playoff birth for the first time since 2002. Not only that, but he’s all but removed all doubt that he’s the team’s quarterback going forward, having faced and beaten some of the best passing defenses in the league in Washington, Dallas, while also going toe to toe with the Ravens on Monday Night in a game that many called the best of the year.

This isn’t surprising for Mayfield, who always knew he could hang in the NFL, but Mayfield started off strong his rookie year, breaking records left and right. Something he didn’t do much of in year two. Yet, in year three, he’s found that swagger again. He’s the winning quarterback at First Energy (Cleveland Browns Stadium), an achievement he claimed in 2020, and now he has another new record; longest recorded pass in Pro Football Focus’s data.

The pass came at the close of the first-half when Mayfield chucked up a Hail Mary pass to the endzone from around his own 40-yard line. The ball went out of bounds on the back of the endzone, causing a Ravens player to hit the goalpost.

The official number is over 70+ yards, but it’s unknown right now just how long the pass really was. PFF tweeted out the next morning that it was the longest pass it ever charted.

This is the kinda thing Mayfield needed this year. It hasn’t just been his ability to be consistent that has come under fire, but many in the media claim that Mayfield doesn’t have a “big arm”. Considering most “long” passes are actually 10-20 yard catches, turned into massive gains after the catch, the rarity of a legitimate 70-yard pass is impressive on its own.

Made even more impressive by the man who keeps disproving his doubters.
