Cavs: Here are 5 things we know after the team’s win against the 76ers
By Chad Porto
The Cavs have defeated the 76ers on Sunday night to the tune of 118-94 and did so without Kevin Love. Here are five things we know after the game.
The Cavs were able to give Cleveland a night of winning after the heartbreaker that was the Browns and Jets game. The Cavs went into their home game against the 76ers with a full lineup, but early into the game, Kevin Love had to leave due to calf issues. Normally that would be a daunting issue to overcome against the 76ers, but they too were without their best big man, as Joel Embiid didn’t play the entire game.
That meant that Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris had to carry the load and that went about as well as you’d expect it to. The Cavs never really trailed in the game, built a big lead heading into the half, and didn’t let up even the slightest.
For the Cavs, however, this is still too early to get excited about. The 76ers, Hornets, and Pistons are teams in flux for various reasons, so it’s important to keep one’s expectations stifled for the time being.
That said, here are five things we learned from this game.
Cedi Osman doesn’t need a lot of time to hurt you
Cedi Osman is averaging over 15 points in just 22 minutes of play. He seems to really flourish as the sixth man off the bench. A role that he seems suited for, as he gets more opportunities to place the offense on his shoulders, as opposed to sharing the responsibility with the starting five.
Larry Nance is a vital piece of the starting five
Larry Nance Jr. is playing very much like how Draymond Green did in his prime for the Golden State Warriors. He had 13 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He’s best in transition and he’s able to utilize his skillset best when he’s in motion. He could be the X-factor as one of the other wings with Kevin Love.
Darius Garland will still struggle against better point guards
Darius Garland struggled some, going 7-of-15 from the floor, 0-for-3 from the three-point line, seven assists, and two turnovers for just 14 points. No doubt playing against Ben Simmons at times caused him to struggle a bit, but he’ll need to learn to play against bigger and longer guys if he’s going to be the team’s future point guard.
Collin Sexton is a pure scorer like few we’ve seen before
Collin Sexton is a smooth scorer. His defense has become suspect but with a frontcourt the Cavs have, he might be ok with not being a great defender. At least as this team is currently built.
Andre Drummond can bully a lot of people
Andre Drummond again had a massive game for the Cavs. Besides another double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds, he also recorded three blocks and two steals. Drummond continues to be a massive upgrade over Tristan Thompson at the starting center spot and is arguably the best defensive center the Cavs have had since Brad Daugherty.
