Cavs: Signing Yogi Ferrell won’t be the spark the team needs
By Chad Porto
The Cavs signed former Maverick and King guard Yogi Ferrell to help offset the loss of numerous guards early in the regular season.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed Yogi Ferrell to a 10-day contract that the team hopes will help offset the gaping hole of depth at the guard position. Nearly every Cpoint guard or combo guard for the Cavs have gone down at some point over the last two weeks. Darius Garland, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Collin Sexton, and even guard/wing Dylan Windler have all been ruled out for injury reasons, while guard/forward Kevin Porter Jr. remains away from the team following an offseason of troubling behavior.
Ferrell, 27, last played for the Sacramento Kings and averaged just 10-odd minutes played and averaged just 4.4 points per game. This was a surprise, as the Kings signed him to a modest deal after Ferrell had a bit of a breakout season with the Mavericks in 2016-2017. He averaged 11 points per game, shooting .412 from the floor and .403 from the three-point line. While his averages have stayed the same, his usage has plummeted from that season.
That gives an indication that Ferrell is someone NBA fans may consider to have “empty stats”, as the Mavericks were one of the worst teams in the league that years he played for them.
Ferrell on paper looks like he can get points, but he may not be the answer to the woes that have plagued the Cavaliers. Beyond just the declining usage, Ferrell isn’t known for his defense, a stable for the Cavs and their current squad of “Heart and Hustle“.
A guy like Exum has value for this team because of his defensive hustle. Ferrell doesn’t bring the same game with him. The Cavs do need help getting points and if Ferrell can get open and drive to the rim, maybe, just maybe, the Cavs can get some use out of him but he’s a stop-gap measure at best and the odds of him getting anything more than the one-10-day contract is not in his favor.
He’ll be able to prove everyone wrong, after all, Javale McGee has been so effective for the Cavs, maybe Ferrell can add something similar.
Either way, he’ll be available to play tonight against the Grizzlies.
