Speaking of things people shouldn’t have done…

Todd Haley was a good coach in Pittsburgh for a time. They had some top-five offenses under his tenure, and the team never had a losing record as the Steelers offensive coordinator. The Browns signing him was considered a big get for the team. He lasted just eight games. He was fired alongside Hue Jackson, and the issues between the two were apparent all season long.

There was some belief that when Jackson was finally fired, either Haley or then defensive coordinator Gregg Williams would take over because everyone knew Jackson was on borrowed time, but his firing was a bit of a shocker.

Even to him, as the great Sam Rutigliano even said that he talked to Haley the day he got fired. Rutigliano claimed that Haley was under the impression he was going to be named the new interim head coach. Even alluding to the fact that Haley came to Cleveland to one-day take over the job from Jackson.

It’s no wonder he and Jackson had issues. So it was no surprise that Jackson was adamant that hiring Haley was a mistake.

"I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made…that was a bad marriage. I never should have done that (hired Todd Haley)"

Whether it was an issue in philosophies or the fact that Jackson viewed Haley as a potential threat to his job, who knows. Haley isn’t talking and Jackson won’t stop.
