Browns: The Athletic’s 7-round mock nets analytics gifts in mid rounds
Round 6, pick 21, Chris Wilcox, CB, BYU
Corner is exactly the type of position you should be drafting for in the sixth-round. Perhaps you find someone who you like and want to get on your practice squad.
Jackson noted how the Browns are trying to upgrade the cornerback room, in addition to special teams, so the later option could be Wilcox’s ticket to the roster.
Plus, the Browns only have four corners under contract in Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, Troy Hill M.J. Stewart and Robert Jackson. A.J. Green and Brian Allen will likely be invited to camp, as well. Bottom line: They’re going to need bodies because after Hill, there’s no guarantees on the depth chart.
Wilcox is big (6-foot-2) and fast. He supposedly ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at BYU’s pro day.
Round 7, pick 257, Kenny Yeboah, TE, Ole Miss
I’ve mocked a tight end to the Browns here before, but I don’t know how much sense it really makes. David Njoku’s still a Brown, so Cleveland has three really good players at the position in Austin Hooper, Harrison Bryant and Njoku. Plus, Stephen Carlson’s still on the roster, making four a fourth tight end.
I’d rather take a quarterback here–some the Browns may like that they can store on the practice squad a developmental prospect. Case Keenum won’t back Baker Mayfield up forever, and there’s a potential out in his contract after this season.
