Browns: 5 most underpaid players for the upcoming 2021 season
By Chad Porto
1. Nick Chubb
The two-time Pro Bowler will make just $3 million and some change in 2021. The Browns running back has already racked up 3,557 and that was with him being the backup for seven games in 2018 and missing four games in 2020. Imagine what his numbers could have been like had he gotten all that missing time. His stats would be even more impressive.
Chubb is one of the top three running backs in the league, and the only one of the three who isn’t a dual-threat. Sure, you could argue that a healthy Christian McCaffery is the best running back in the league, due to his game-breaking speed and out-of-the-world athleticism and you’d have a case. Chubb isn’t that kind of a runner.
No, he’s the back who runs through weak arm tackles and beats down defenses with a steady and consistent ease. That’s who Chubb is, a bruiser with top-notch speed.
Chubb did miss four games due to injury (most of six weeks overall), but that isn’t expected to be a lingering issue heading into 2021. That said, if there are more injuries, the Browns would be wise to re-think any potential extensions until his health is properly assessed. The last thing the team wants to do is take Chubb from having a great contract to a bad one that will cost the team in the long run. Just look at the Rams for reasons why you don’t overpay runningbacks.
Should Chubb be healthy for 2021, then it’ll be hard to argue that any contract he gets is anything but a good deal.
