Browns: 4 Day-three linebackers to target in 2021 NFL Draft
4. Derrick Barnes, Purdue
Derrick Barnes comes to the NFL having been a three-starter in the Big Ten. While playing for Purdue he proved to be an incredibly tough and physical player at the inside linebacker spot.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein was particularly fond of Barnes’ strength, as well as his mental toughness. He noted that “if” he makes it, the Boilermaker projects as an early-down backup, in addition to being a fixture on special teams.
Something else that may help Barnes: Versatility. Besides, Innside linebacker, he also learned to play defensive end.
As senior, Barnes tied for sixth wit 6.7 solo tackles per game (FBS), while compiling a team-high 54 takedowns in just six games.
He also had an interception, while breaking up two passes.
If Barnes is picked, he might be hard pressed to make the final roster, but that special teams blurb is worth remembering.
