The Browns have selected cornerback Greg Newsome III in the 2021 NFL Draft
Cleveland has made their choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, picking cornerback Greg Newsome III as the newest member of the Browns. Cleveland was the 11th worst team against the pass in 2020, and the selection of the cornerback from Northwestern has only continued to upgrade the pass defense this offseason.
Newsome will join fellow new acquisitions John Johnson and Troy Hill among the new-look secondary. The team will likely take at least one more secondary player at some point over the Browns’ next eight picks, with the hope that the team won’t be as easy to torch as they were last year.
This might also be a sign that Greedy Williams isn’t recovering as well as expected or may not be ready to join the team by training camp. Though, that’s just speculative.
The Browns didn’t just stop with the secondary, making big splashes as well on the line of scrimmage by getting Jadeveon Clowney, and also signing Takk McKinley and Malik Jackson to bolster the front four.
After Greg Newsome, who should the Browns take in the 2021 NFL Draft next?
The new-look Browns shouldn’t be done though, with needs at linebacker, and defensive tackle to still address, it will be interesting to see who gets picked up next.
Top picks like linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and defensive tackle Christian Barmore were on the board as well when Cleveland’s 26th pick came up, and the decision to not take a player there was read loud and clear that the focus was to improve the secondary first and foremost.
That doesn’t mean they or other players like them won’t be on the team at a certain point. There are always players who fall in the draft and if the Browns truly want one of them or perhaps someone like defensive end Jayson Oweh, the team could always move up to get them.
The Browns do have eight more picks, with five to go through the next three rounds. Moves could always be made.
That said, for tonight, it looks like Newsome will be the first and only new player added to the brown and orange, but who knows what tomorrow brings.
