Indians: 3 players who may need to spend some more time in Columbus
By Chad Porto
1B/INF Yu Chang
Yu Chang had so much promise coming out of spring training. It’s a shame to see what’s happened since. Jake Bauers, the man he shares platoon duties with at first base, is starting to outpace him in every way, and the need to play Chang at all has greatly disappeared. The Indians could have used him elsewhere, he does play shortstop too, but his bat isn’t good enough today to justify replacing one struggling hitter with another.
Chang still has one option left, so he could be sent down to Triple-A for a spell or so, hoping that he can find his stroke again. Hitting is so much about timing and Chang’s is clearly off. When he does make contact and put the ball in play, it’s usually an easy out. Now, the entire major leagues are currently dealing with this type of issue, with the Major League clubs only posting a .232 average in April.
So maybe Chang will bounce back eventually.
The problem is that there is an option the Indians can try, even though he’s had his own fair share of issues. Bobby Bradley is only hitting .171 in Triple-A, but he does have four home runs, 11 RBIs in just 11 games so far.
So even if Bradley hits at the same Chang does, at least Bradley will score runs.
