Latest Cavs rumors have Cleveland looking at point guards
The latest Cavs rumors center around the team looking at backup point guards T.J. McConnell and Alex Caruso.
With virtually no cap space, the Cavs are reportedly looking to be aggressive with the use of their mid-level exception, and this is what’s on their radar, per Cleveland.com.
McConnell led the league in steals , but has indicated he’d love to stay with the Indiana Pacers.
Caruso shot an impressive 40 percent from 3-point range this past season, while averaging 6.4 points and 2.8 assists in about 21 minutes per night for LeBron James’ Lakers.
If you managed to make it through the first 88 words of this post, thanks. It was boring to write and probably uninspiring to read. Neither move makes the Cavs appreciably better and I’ll be stunned if Cleveland doesn’t find itself in the lottery, again, next season.
Alas, they need a backup point guard who can make the offense work, especially when the Darius Garland/Collin Sexton backcourt goes cold.
This isn’t to slam Caruso and McConnell, they are good NBA role players, however, my lack of enthusiasm centers around the Cavs…bare with me.
I can’t help but think of a team like the Suns when thinking about the Cavs. Phoenix advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2010. The last time they were there, Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire were winding down their Phoenix careers. They were a part of some good teams in the mid-to-late 2000s, but could never get past the Lakers and Spurs.
Since losing in 2010, the Suns went on to lose, a lot. Phoenix had just one winning season until this year. They were regulars in the lottery. They struck gold in 2015, drafting Devin Booker 13th overall in 2015, but even then the losing continued and they searched for the parts to complement their draft steal.
Phoenix got lucky and added center Deandre Ayton with the No. 1 overall pick in 2018. However, even Ayton needed time.
They finished off the roster with some veterans, adding, most notably, Chris Paul. He’s made a huge difference. Even at age 36, Paul is still a difference maker and it looks like the Cavs could’ve had him via trade.
Maybe the big takeaway from Phenix is patience. Booker obviously had talent, but it took him six years to get this far. The Cavs have a guy named Collin Sexton coming off a season in which he averaged 24.3 points. Talented? Yes, but it’s imperative the Cavs keep surrounding him with talent.
If you’re a believer in the core of Sexton, Garland and Okoro, it may take another three years for Cleveland to finally win.
On the flip side, Sexton could be traded if the Cleveland somehow ends up in a position to draft someone such as Jalen Suggs. Ah, the life of a Cavs fan when LeBron James isn’t a rostered player.
