Cleveland Indians: 6 trades targeted by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden
5.Cleveland Indians trade target: Kyle Gibson
He’s 33 and had a 73-74 career record, but Kyle Gibosn is exactly the type of pitcher the Cleveland Indians need at this point, as Terry Fracona’s rotation has just one pitcher remaining from the group that broke camp.
Zach Plesac’s broken finger injury was devastating, and some still believe Shane Beiber’s shoulder soreness will spell doom on the rest of 2021.
But in acquiring Gibson, the Indians would get a player who can deliver a little more consistency than what the club is currently getting from the likes of J.C. Mejia and Triston McKenzie.
Gibson, a ninth-year veteran, is 4-0 with a 2.09 this season.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure his contract will be attractive to the fiscally conservative Tribe. He’s earning $10 million, so if the Indians get him at the trade deadline, they’ll be on hook for a little less than $5 million.
If they’re willing to take on the money–and I’m not sure they are–Gibson might be a wise investment. He’s also under contract for $7 million next season, which is pretty good for a capable starting pitcher.
We’ve already covered the Rangers when talking about Calhoun. They should be looking to sell and probably wouldn’t mind shedding Gibson’s salary.
