Cavs: Team should trade a young player and keep the draft pick
By Chad Porto
The Cavs nabbed the third overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
The Cavs have the third overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NBA Draft and there are rumors that the Cavs may trade it away. There are also rumors that they may trade away the young talent they have and keep the pick. There are also rumors that Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian are finally done. Rumors are rumors for a reason. Sure, some carry more weight than others, but at the end of the day, a rumor is only an acknowledgment about past plans.
We have no idea what the Cavaliers are going to do with that pick. Some believe it’s being traded, others believe it’s guys like Darius Garland and Collin Sexton that are going to get shipped. The thought process behind both sets of rumors are the same though; a (or several) trade(s) will be made to expedite the rebuild process.
Koby Altman shouldn’t be the one making the decision but here we are.
The Cavs should keep the pick.
Darius Garland showed improvement in 2021, but he’s not a top-ten player at his position. Might never be. He might be as good as an Andre Miller-type, which isn’t bad at all, but the Cavs need a franchise player, who can lead the team like Jayson Tatum, Luka Doncic, Devin Booker and Trae Young can.
They don’t have one of those guys yet. They have some good pieces to help those kinds of guys, like Jarrett Allen who’s a good defensive player (but not for $25 million), and Collin Sexton, a good slasher to the rim, but has a slew of issues that will prohibit him from ever being “that guy”.
The Cavs will get one of the best players in the draft and the top four or five guys are all game-changers. Jalen Suggs is currently the guy this writer wants in Cleveland, and that means someone already on the roster is losing their spot if that happens.
Regardless of who the Cavs take, the team needs to hold onto this pick. Trading it for just about anything else is a mistake.
