Browns: A Stephon Gilmore trade would be huge but team still has concerns elsewhere

The Browns faithful are still hoping a Stephon Gilmore trade happens.

There’s no real trade talk happening with the Browns and Patriots over Stephon Gilmore but some fans are still pushing for it. The Browns are pretty solid at cornerback but it’s more because they have a lot of similarly-talented players, and because they have two really great corners. They have a lot of solid starters, and only one star. Gilmore would give Cleveland two legit stars at the position.

Again, there’s no real talk of it happening and frankly, there’s really no need for it to happen. Most offenses don’t have two receivers of the same quality, so the need for the Browns to have two corners of the same quality just isn’t there. That doesn’t mean that Gilmore wouldn’t be a huge boom for the team.

It just means he’s not needed. Not that he’s not wanted.

The Browns have bigger concerns on defense than at cornerback.

Everyone’s been there before. You’re waiting to hear back from a buddy about plans, and another buddy asks if you’re free. One’s a sure thing, one’s in limbo. You already set up plans with the limbo-friend and don’t want to bail unless things aren’t going to happen. It’s a regular weekend for most 20-somethings.

That’s the issue the Browns have at linebacker. Cleveland went out and got a bunch of new linebackers. Two are rookies, and can play safety too, while the other is considered a great locker room guy even if he’s not a great player. The position is still suspect because of the unknown of it all.

Will these players actually produce? We have no idea. They might, they might not.

If the Browns were going to go chase down talent, it should be at linebacker (even defensive tackle), and not corner.  Cleveland is hoping the linebackers are improved but unlike the corners, there’s no real reason to suspect they will. The Browns newest veteran corner, Troy Hill, is far and away better at his position than the Browns newest linebacker Anthony Walker. We know the cornerbacks are improved.

We hope the linebackers are.

If the team was looking to make moves still, it should be at linebacker (or even defensive tackle) before corner.

Though I wouldn’t say no to Stephon Gilmore getting traded to Cleveland.
