Cavs Trade Idea: Ben Simmons goes to CLE in almost-acceptable trade package
By Chad Porto
A new trade idea has the 76ers sending Ben Simmons to the Cavs for Collin Sexton.
Want the Cavs to go get Ben Simmons from the 76ers? Well, you might be the only one after the 2021 NBA Playoffs, but Brett Siegel of NBAanalysis.net has pitched a trade idea that is almost good enough for the Cavaliers to consider but may still be pretty rich for what you’re giving up, and what you’re giving back.
Every trade that’s been talked about for Simmons, and every NBA trade expert have all centered on one thing; getting back value for the 76ers point forward. There are very few trades that seem to make sense for the 76ers if the point of a trade is to go talent-for-talent. One idea was Bradley Beal for Simmons. That’s the kind of trade many NBA experts would expect the 76ers to go with if they did move Simmons.
There seems to be some truth to that, as apparently the Indiana Pacers tried to trade Malcolm Brogdon and a first-round pick for Simmons and the 76ers denied the trade. The term “all-star caliber player” has been used a lot, and Brogdon would certainly qualify. You could argue he should’ve been an All-Star in 2020-2021.
So with that, what is Siegel of NBAanalysis proposing for the Cavs to offer to get the deal done?
The trade that would send Ben Simmons to the Cavs for Kevin Love
As you see, the 76ers get two first-round picks, Collin Sexton, and Kevin Love, while the Cavs get back Ben Simmons and young guard Shake Milton.
This is fairly good value for the Cavs and 76ers alike. The Cavs probably don’t want to give up two first-round draft picks and Sexton, but it does clear the books of Kevin Love’s contract while giving Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff the ideal point guard for his offensive and defensive schemes.
Ideally, this trade would be one-first, unprotected, and Sexton being sent over with Love to get back Simmons. As good as Milton is, he’s not worth a first-round draft pick, and despite his improvement, if the trade had to happen without him in order to keep the other first-round pick, then that should be the move the Cavs make.
If the 76ers feel that Love is fair value for Milton, and the first-round (unprotected) and Sexton are good value for Simmons, then you make the move in a heartbeat.
What do you guys think of this idea?
