The Cavs claim to be interested in moving up during the 2021 NBA Draft. It’s the part of the pre-draft season that rumors fly wildly, but now this topic is being heavily reported.

If Cleveland did make the move, it would be to acquire Oklahoma State point guard Cade Cunningham, according to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor.

In an on-air interview with WKNR-850, ESPN’s Bobby Marks recently talked about there not being all that big a gap between Cunningham, and the second-wave of talent (Evan Mobley and Jalen Green), but if the Cavs aren’t spinning Fedor, then they’d disagree with Marks’ assessment.

Moving up to No. 1 one would take a deal similar to what the 76ers offered the Celtics in 2017, when Philly gave its No. 3 overall pick and a 2018 protected first-rounder to  Boston.

That said, an NBA executive said it would probably take move to get a deal done.

Cavs would probably have to offer something else

Does that mean a future draft pick, or could it mean someone on the roster? Naturally, Darius Garland or Collin Sexton’s name should come to mind, as there’d be no need for them with Cunningham on the roster.

It will be stunning to see Detroit make this move because they haven’t been relevant since LeBron and the Cavs ended their run in the middle 2000s.

With that in mind, the Cavs look to be just blowing smoke which suggests the Cavs are up to something. After all, it was just a few weeks ago the organization said it would trade its new No. 3 pick for an established NBA veteran.

Ultimately, talk of trading the first pick sounds, great, but realistically, it’s not going to happen–and that’s OK.

A player with superstar potential can be had with the third selection and winning the right to pick in this spot is the luckiest the team has been since winning the Andrew Wiggins lottery in 2013.
