Indians: 4 minor league players who could be future All-Stars
By Chad Porto
SS Andres Gimenez (AAA) – 22 years old
2021 stats: 38 G, 154 AB, 8 HR, 23 RBI, .260/.307/.794
Andres Gimenez struggled as the Tribes’ opening day shortstop, hitting just .179. He was eventually replaced by the Tribes’ opening day starter at center field, Amed Rosario. Rosario has been brilliant since the move to shortstop. His defense has improved, his hitting improved, and he’s showing some ability to get extra-base hits. So the decision to send Gimenez down made sense.
Currently ranked by Prospects1500 as the Indians’ No. 7 prospects, Gimenez has been able to turn around his season since being demoted.
Since going down to Triple-A, Gimenes has hit .260 and exploded as a power hitter with eight home runs in just 38 games. That’s the kind of clip that could see him hit 30-odd home runs in a 162 game season. Not only has his offensive improved, but his defense has as well. In 28 games at shortstop with the Tribe, Gimenez had five errors. In 22 games at shortstop with the Clippers, he’s had just two. As far as future All-Stars go, Gimenez is looking like one.
What he needs to work on: Consistency and power are the two biggest things for Gimenez. If he does have that big, home run power that some think is possible, he could be a huge difference-maker. He may be back with the club by September at this rate.
