Collin Sexton will unlikely get a rookie-max contract from the Cavs.

While the trade rumors for Collin Sexton have been raging all summer long, many believed they were just that; rumor. Yet, over the weekend The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd has apparently heard enough things about the Cavs and their directions this offseason to post an article on the website stating the Cavs are very open to trading Sexton. Another reporter, this time a local Cleveland guy, Evan Dammarell, is also reporting that Sexton’s name is gaining more traction and that the Cavs signing him to a rookie-max offer is off the table.

If the rumor is true and the Cavs don’t in fact offer Collin Sexton a rookie-max deal at some point this offseason, it seems all but a lock that the Cavaliers will trade Sexton in some deal. While this may upset some fans, it has to be emphasized that Sexton is not a $25 million a year player. People make excuses for him all the time but stars don’t make excuses, they make it happen.

It seems more and more likely Collin Sexton and Kevin Love are traded together

More and more rumors are popping up not just about Collin Sexton now being more likely to be traded, but about how Sexton and Kevin Love could be shipped out in the same package in a way to get out from Love’s contract. The idea in theory works but it all depends on who you get back for Love.

It’s beyond obvious his best days are behind him, at 32 he’s been battling injuries over the last three years at a much higher rate than ever before. Either he’s done as a starter in this league, or like Blake Griffen, he’s phoning it in to justify leaving.

Either way, it’s time to move on from Love. Yet, getting back just anyone for the pair isn’t an option. The Cavs need to make sure they get either a high draft pick, a couple of young assets, or a star of some sort.

Otherwise, it makes little sense.
