The Cavs have selected Evan Mobley with the third overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

The Cavaliers have officially selected Evan Mobley with the 2021 NBA Draft. Mobley played for USC and was one of the best players in the Pac-12. Many consider his ceiling to be a very high-caliber prospect and has a good defensive skillset.

The 2021 NBA Draft started as many expected with the Detroit Pistons taking Cade Cunningham first overall, and was so sure of the pick, news broke many hours before the Draft started itself that the Pistons were taking him. Right after that, the Houston Rockets followed suit and selected Jalen Green, completing the much expected first three picks of the night.

The Cavs got a nice rookie in Evan Mobley but it now complicates the frontcourt

Maybe it’s a good problem to have, with the Cavaliers taking Mobley. After all, the team is still actively trying to bring back Jarrett Allen as well, which would solidify the roster at center. Mobley is a pretty quick-footed big-man and should be able to be a defensive force down low.

His defense isn’t bad but it’s not nearly at the level of Allen’s, so the two are going to be very different types of players on the roster, with Allen focusing more on defense when he’s on the court and possibly Mobely focusing more on scoring as a reserve player. He needs to improve his offensive skillset still, as he’s not anywhere close to a finished offensive prospect but with some time he may be able to prove that he can play as well on the offensive side as things as well as the defensive.

Deciding on what happens with Collin Sexton tonight and in the coming days, may paint a better picture of what to expect for the 2021-2022 season.
